bullet The American Cancer Society estimates that 215,990 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to occur among women in the United States during 2004.
 
bullet Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed non-skin cancer in women, accounting for nearly one of every three cancers diagnosed in U.S. women, and breast cancer is the leading cancer among women of many Asian and Pacific Islander groups in the United States.
 
bullet Breast cancer ranks second among cancer deaths in women (after lung cancer).
 
bullet The risk to older women, ages 40 and older, is much greater than to younger women. About 77% of breast cancers occur in women ages 50 and older. However, the survival rate for younger women who get breast cancer is lower than for older women.
 
bullet White women have a higher incidence of breast cancer than African American women after age 40, while African American women have a slightly higher incidence rate before age 40.
