The American Cancer Society
estimates that 215,990 new cases of invasive breast cancer are
expected to occur among women in the United States during 2004.
|
 |
Breast cancer is the most
frequently diagnosed non-skin cancer in women, accounting for
nearly one of every three cancers diagnosed in U.S. women, and
breast cancer is the leading cancer among women of many Asian and
Pacific Islander groups in the United States.
|
 |
Breast cancer ranks second among
cancer deaths in women (after lung cancer).
|
 |
The risk to older women, ages 40
and older, is much greater than to younger women. About 77% of
breast cancers occur in women ages 50 and older. However, the
survival rate for younger women who get breast cancer is lower
than for older women.

 |
White women have a higher
incidence of breast cancer than African American women after age
40, while African American women have a slightly higher
incidence rate before age 40. |
